The ABI has warned UK motorists including hauliers that – unless the EU Commission agrees to include a post-Brexit UK in its Green Card Free Circulation Zone – they will need to carry a Green Card when driving anywhere in the EU after the transition period ends on 31 December.
This applies to those crossing from Northern Ireland into the Republic and anyone found not carrying a Green Card risks prosecution and having their vehicle seized.
The ABI says it has urged Transport Secretary Grant Schapps to ‘put pressure’ on the EU Commission to exempt UK drivers from the need to carry Green Cards. Whether this will have any effect remains to be seen, however, and the safe bet is to assume Green Cards will be required from 1 January.
