The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined two unconnected firms a total of £330,000 for sending a combined total of around 2.7 million spam text messages.
One of the two firms, West-Sussex-based Leads Works Ltd, sent more than 2.5 million nuisance texts during May and June 2020, resulting in a record 10,000 complaints.
Meanwhile, Valca Vehicle Ltd was fined £80,000 by the ICO for sending more than 95,000 marketing text messages during June and July last year without recipients’ permission. The messages referenced the pandemic and were aimed at individuals whose finances have been adversely affected. The ICO described this as a clear attempt to capitalise on and profiteer from COVID-19.
