The ABI has collaborated with the National Flood Forum to produce a guide for UK homeowners explaining how to reduce and mitigate the risk of flooding and what to expect from their insurance providers.
With winter approaching, the guidance is timely. More than 5.2 million properties in England are believed to be at risk of flooding, with 80,000 experiencing major flooding incidents since 2007. A further 574,000 properties are thought to be at risk in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
It’s important insurance providers are confident that how they respond to flooding incidents will accord with what the ABI is suggesting consumers should expect.
Among other things, the report sets out how homeowners can expect the claims process to play out. This includes: what to do in the immediate aftermath, cleaning and stripping out, drying, repairs and returning to the property.
The guide also outlines industry best practice on offering cash settlements, where the customer prefers this option.
